Sharp-ribbed Newts

Post by moloch gibbon on Sat May 16 2009, 19:30

Finally got of my butt and took a few pics of my Sharp-ribbed Newts. These are an unusual newt in that to deter predators, they can poke their sharp ribs through their skin in an attempt to cause discomfort in their assailant's mouth thereby hopefully making them drop the newt. These are only about half-grown; they'll reach around 12 inches long in about a year's time.
