daft cats

Today i was driving behind some elderly people and a cat ran from someones house, just in front of their car, they werent going fast enough to hit it and i thought "that was lucky !", then his mate runs out from the house as well straight into the wheel of their car, after being spun round under the wheel the cat limped off back to the house with one leg dragging behind it (i think it was done for basically, back legs looked broken).

Why are they so daft when it comes to roads ?

I think animals just like the rest of us loose their peripheral some times and things don't register when focused on something else. Poor cat all the same.
