sudden baby death

Post by snakeboyadam2k8 on Fri Sep 18 2009, 20:34

A friend of ours who hatched 14 beardies about 6 weeks ago has started to lose a few babies. They have convulsions or fits , swell up and then die. Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be the cause? This is her females first clutch and she has been told that it is not uncommon for this to happen with the first clutch and that things should improve with subsequent clutches. Has anyone else heard this?

Sorry to hear that's happening. I know it's common for some to die shortly after.
I would make sure the temp's are ok.
Are they feeding and active ?

They had been feeding well and very active until the last few days, would a lack of UVB light cause this as i notice they are on the floor of a 18" high viv and very far away from the light.

It could be a factor, your dragons should be no more than 12 inches away.
Do you know what temperature the basking end is at, and the cooler end ?

No I'll have to ask, what should it be as a matter of interest? We have a clutch of eggs of our own (our first) at the moment so its always useful to have this sort of info available.
cheers

The basking temp should be over 100F and the cooler end should be over 80F.
Another thing I forgot to ask what substrate are they using ?
