Hi
Anybody out there got any experience, views or comments on the suitability of Argentine black and white tegus as pets,
our local pet shop has a pair in stock and they certainly are lovely looking animals. They have been well handled and are very friendly. Thanks

Hi there,

I have had my tegu for around 4 months now he was quite grown on, and the clincher for me was that he was dog tame. He has a wonderful personality and likes nothing better than to crawl up your arm and come and sit on your shoulder. Most of the hard work was done for me getting one so tame, and getting them to continue trusting you is important-some nice treats of cooked fish and chicken does the trick I find! But dont let them get accustomed to your hands providing food, as one day you may just get a bite purely out of excitement! I find feeding off extra long tongs does the trick!

The B&W are believed to be the easiest tegu to tame and keep tame so I think it would be the best starter monitor for defs compared to boscs, as some may never tame down no matter how much work is put into them.

Here is a couple of good sites giving basic care and husbandry:-

B & W Tegu

Post by snakeboyadam2k8 on Fri Mar 27, 2009 9:50 pm

Hi Emma
Thanks for the info and the links, they were especially useful, our local pet shop has a pair in at the moment and my wife has fallen for the male. He has been well handled while in the shop and is very tame. It looks like we will be adding a tegu to our ever expanding collection!
John

Lovely pics Emma, definitely think we will have to get one of these.

Down at Raymonds last night and your name cropped up, didn't realise you were also into rabbits, you missed a good show yesterday in N'ards. There is another one on 25th April also in N'Ards, would love to see you there. Obviously you are interested in big animals (having a tegu) so you might be interested in our Continental giants pics attached

(Sorry for posting rabbit pics on the lizard section - we won't make a habit of this - honest).
