Funky Western Hognose

Post by KayDee on Fri Mar 20 2009, 18:59

This girl came out of a clutch that hatched this week.

Fresh out of the egg on Wednesday:

After post-hatch shed also on Wednesday!:

She's not the only one with odd markings from that clutch either!

Magic result Kieran! Soz the photo you sent via mobile the other day didn't come through on my phone, but I guessed it was a hatching Hog. 7 is a good number - so some of the dodgy looking eggs made it then :)

Looking good. It will be good to watch how these develop over the coming years. I assume they are being held back for breeding?

keep us posted on their progression and good luck with feeding them. it can be a pain sometimes but i have yet to lose one. Some just take longer than others.

I'm quiet pleased with the result. Indeed, one of the two moldy eggs gave me a hatchling. And to think I was going to chuck it!

There are a couple that I will probably hold back for breeding Warren. I'll most likely sell on the 'normal' looking ones.

Do you think these are the result of incubation variables or natural random genetic variation?

Thats a good question. Variation in incubation temperatures, even if for only a day, at the wrong time can cause dramatic effects in terms of both pattern and morphology. The only way to tell whether or not yours was due to temperature or as a result of a gene carried by both parents is to line breed.

Warren have you ever sexed a clutch of Westerns from tail size? I've heard from various people that this can be done with these little guys. From the first try it looks like I have 3.4, however I'm really not sure as some of the differences in length were not that great.

I have. Its very easy. Females have short tails and males have long tails. Send me some pictures the tails from the underside and I will advise you as to their sex. The best way to do this is to put them on a piece of glass and photograph them from below. We need a full body shot.
