Red Clawed Scorpions

Hey all,

Have a couple of Pandinus cavimanus....great little Scorpions from Central Africa, often referred to as the "Tanzanian Red Claw", only a little smaller than the Emperor Scorpion so big enough! While Tanzania is referred to this Scorpion is widely distributed over central Africa.

The guys we have [from Jim...thanks] seem hardy little souls, they are both in separate housings, although they may be kept communally.

As they're pretty small at the minute they are kept in an appropriate sized housing with a thick layer of coco fibre substrate topped with a little sphagnum moss, a flower pot to hide in, a branch and artificial greenery. The substrate is moist this assists in maintaining relative high humidity. They dig, climb and tunnel...shift things around in their housing mostly, if not exclusively, at night...we throw in a couple of appropriate sized roaches every other day...heating is provided by a heat mat and temps max out at 27.5 degrees. I've read articles that heat can range anywhere between 21 and 29 degrees and the Scorps thrive...this being the case they'd probably do well at room temperature.

Apologies for the poor quality photos, I'll take a few more next time I'm back and I'll be sure to place something next to them to give a sense of scale and size....

Thanks Tan, yup these are a little different, Jack reports that they've already grown in the last couple of weeks...along with our [Jack's] spiders and frogs the scorpions are providing a great source of alternate interest in the house!!!

Hedgehogs are a nice alternate interest too
