Herpetological Society

Post by morelia on Wed Jun 10 2009, 11:46

Hi all,

Some of you already know of this, others not.....the new Herpetological Society of Ireland (HSI) was officially launched in Glasnevin, Dublin late last month (30th May). As a member of the Science Team on the Steering Group / Committee I can say that everyone involved with the initiation and setting-up of the Society have worked extremely hard to get it to the launch, and it is very much an official and professional society.

Very soon the first full colour newsletter (called Lacerta after the scientific name of our only native lizard) will be available for members; these will be quarterly and feature Herp related articles and info of local and regional significance, relating to both exotic and native Herps. The Society's scope encompasses all who keep, study or are otherwise involved with reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates, both exotic / captive and native. Anyone interested in submitting articles for the newsletter is warmly welcome to do so (as long as it is relevant to the subject encompassed by the Society) - I will be posting more info relating to this in the next few days. These newsletters will also be lodged in and available at every major library in the UK and Ireland.

While it is in its early stages of development we are now active in taking memberships which are very reasonable at only 25 Euros a year. Usually an annual membership would run from September for 12 months, however as the Society was launched recently, anyone joining up now will actually get 15 months membership for that price during their first year.

Membership forms can be downloaded from the Society website:
http://www.thehsi.org/

Over the next few days I will be posting threads here with information relevant to the Society, its aims, various contact details, what membership entails, writing articles for the newsletter etc. so do keep an eye out :)

Hi Tan,

It was at the Botanical Gardens in Glasnevin. TBH most info relating to it has been posted on another forum - hence why I've started to post the info here, so a wider range of people know about the Society. I was unable to attend the launch myself due to work commitments so can't comment on it TBH.

Its in the first post bud - and I've posted a link to the website, albeit theres a home page and membership form on there at the moment and nought else. Its a newly formed Society, based mainly in the Dublin area but there will be launches in Northern Ireland and Cork soon, so it is an Ireland-wide Society. Its basically a group of people who keep, breed, study and work with reptiles, amphibians and inverts - and among the Committee there are some very knowledgable and dedicated people.

The Society aims to hold regular meetings, away-days, talks and displays; there will be a quarterly newsletter for members and any member can contribute to its content. But the Society also aims to act in more important ways - for example to initiate and become involved in studies on our native herps; to promote the hobby in a positive light to the wider general public; to liase with other animal welfare organisations and work WITH them when and where needed; to dispel popular myths and educate both our members and the general public; to uphold good husbandry practices for captive animals.

I'll be posting more threads about the Society in the coming days, so for anyone interested - watch this space!

I think this is a great idea - and a society that deserves to do well! Well done to all concerned! Very Happy Karl, updates etc would be a great idea. Any organisation which will raise the positve profile and atributes of herps can only be a good thing.

This message is mainly directed at those who have already signed up for membership with The Herpetological Society of Ireland. I am just making a post to apologise to those who are waiting to receive their publication in the post. There was yet again another glitch with the printing and as we are striving for excellence we decided to hold it back another couple of days until everything was perfected for our members.

We had hoped that many would be receiving their copy of the publication by the end of this week. I can however say that it will be posted by the end of the week and you will be receiving it in those coming days. Again apologies from myself and on behalf of the steering committee we hope you enjoy this issue of our publication.

I would also like to just say to anyone still considering membership I would encourage anyone interested to fill out an application and join. If you don’t feel comfortable sending money in the post or you cannot get a bank draft or cheque please contact us we will do what we can to facilitate those concerned but who want to join.

Just to note those who are members can enjoy full colour, professional publications offered quarterly that that is full of great information and new learning experiences. There will also be lectures, workshops, guides and many more events that members can look forward to in the foreseeable future. The HSI team has some highly qualified people on board ranging from scientists to qualified herpetologists that are always willing to help out. Members also have the opportunity to submit their own articles, artwork and photography and it is a great opportunity to become a published author.

Please feel free to contact us!

In addition to the Aims and Powers of the Society, as held within the Constitution, a link to a more pictorial version of the Aims is given below. This is a facsimile of the presentation given at the Launch of the Society.

It does not show ALL aims as they are detailed by explicit, implicit or other provisions within the Constitution.

We are, of course, open to any queries (specific or general).

Link to a pictorial info document:
