Can someone explain?

Post by snakeboyadam2k8 on Fri Sep 11, 2009 9:55 am

I have seen a number of postings which contain references to snakes being 1/3 het for something or 2/3 het for something else and even one reference to being 70% het for something. How does this work out?
My understanding is that an animal can pass on 1/2 of its DNA, assuming an animal is homozygous to start with it can only pass on 1/2 to its offspring which makes the offspring 1/2 (or 50% ) het. For succeeding generations this will be further reduced by a factor of 2 giving 1/4 (or 25%) or 1/8 or a 1/16 and so on, I don't see how an animal can be either 1/3 or 2/3 het for something, can someone please explain?

You should read the genetics posts [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It gives a basic understanding of how they work.
It can be a bit hard to get your head round at first but well worth it.

I see now where the 66% and 33% comes from its not actually a percentage of a gene that the animal carries (which I believe is what some people think) but a percentage of the offspring in a clutch which will carry a particular trait or gene.
Thanks for that

None of it can be totally acurate as mother nature will do as she pleases but it is a good guide to what you can expect.

When I first heard mention of the percentages I too like you wondered how the hell that worked as it wasn't possible (going on the same thinking you mentioned in your first post) but Phil very kindly took the time to explain it to me but yes I am sure most people upon hearing that for the first time or even people who have not taken the time to read up on it do think that.
