Terrapins - livefood?

Post by Demoniqe on Fri Apr 24 2009, 15:35

Is it OK to feed crickets and waxworms to terrapins? (more specifically red-eared sliders?)

I don't think the leos would miss a few crickets (they've got nice fat tails ATM)

My father feeds him mealworms, but I think Squirt might consider them beneath his notice as he doesn't eat them

It's been a long time since I have had a rescue in and one thing I do know is the diet is always been a hot topic but many people do agree on certain foods. I always fed them gut loaded crics and earth worms and never had a problem with those but am not sure where mealies are concerned.

Crickets and waxworm larvae can be feed occasionally.
A very good diet for RES would be :
Plant lear, aquatic plants and salad material should be freely available.
Raw whole small fish occasionally
earthworms occasionally
Small snails and mollusks occasionally
Good quality dried food such as Reptomin 3 times a week
Rehydrated low fat dried cat, dog or trout pellets, twice weekly for juveniles and once a week for adults.

Hope this helps
